Literacy

Literacy

Every year we celebrate Book Week in March to coincide with World Book Day. We host a range of events throughout the week and have visiting guests and shows. We organise a wide variety of activities, such as trips to Drogheda library, Dress Up Day, Readathon, Parents Reading and much more. It always proves to be very successful and enjoyable.

First Steps

In Marymount, we adopt and implement the First Steps Literacy resource as a whole school literacy initiative across the areas of Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. It was designed in Western Australia for schools looking for a practical resource to improve student literacy outcomes at primary level.

A whole school approach is central to its success and teachers follow a whole school annual plan that caters for the children's literacy needs. We promote the strands through a writer's notice board, a large collection of books that is used solely for First Steps as well as professional development courses that are run through the summer.
